Spring Break

Past the age of twenty-two, Spring Break does not mean much. Usually, you enjoy this break for the last time while you are in college. But, as a teacher I still get to enjoy this little event. And as a firefighter, Mitch will get to emjoy it as well(depending on his schedule). This year we both have the entire week off. Now, at first we thought we would be responsible and do some house chores and maybe get some projects done.

But, on second thought we have decided to have a week of fun, travel and relaxation. So, we will be heading out of town this weekend. Beginning this evening our Spring Break begins, and we are definitely excited. It is kind of funny how giddy we are to be taking advantage of Spring Break like a couple of teenagers, LOL!!! Of course, there will be no MTV parties or wild nights out in Cancun. But, we will be enjoying the beach and some much needed vacation time. See you in a week!

One Year Ago...

We sold our first home we ever lived in together.

In 2004, we bought the most adorable townhome in Centreville. Well, it needed some TLC. But when we were done with it, we had ourselves a gorgeous little home. Our very first home together, where we started a new chapter in our lives.

So, many memories are in that home. Many nights spent sitting on the deck drinking wine and discussing future plans. Too many BBQ's to count. Many, many out of control parties involving beer pong. Our infamous Halloween celebrations. Birthday parties, anniversaries, bachelor/bachelorette parties. Spring and summer days doing yard work. One in particular day with Nicole after we closed on the house, involving a tomahawk. Nicole will understand. It was the house we lived in when Mitch was going through Fire school. Most important, it was where Mitch and I were engaged. And then the home we lived in as newlyweds and celebrated our first wedding anniversary.

We love our new home and could not be happier. But, sometimes when the breeze hits you just right, memories will surface. And that happened yesterday, while gardening in the backyard. Spring is here and we moved into that house in the spring of 2004. It is hard to believe we have not been there for almost a year now.

It was a wonderful home to start our lives in and we miss it.

Mitch is Back to School

This April I will be going back to school to get my EMT Intermediate certification. Now some of you may be asking yourselves, "I thought that all firefighters were EMTs?" Well that is correct, but there are several classes of EMTs. Those classes being EMT Basic, EMT Intermediate, and EMT Paramedic. Currently I am an EMT Basic, which means that I can provide basic patient care such as wound management, splinting, oxygen therapy, and CPR/Automatic Defibrilation. The training that I'll be starting in April will prepare me to become an EMT Intermediate.

So what's the difference? Well, in Virginia there is no difference between an EMT Intermediate and an EMT Paramedic. Both certifications give you the ability to administer medications to patients as well as perform more complicated and invasive procedures such as endotracheal intubation, or shoving a tube down someone's throat in layman's terms. My educational experience will last about 5 months and is followed by a 4-5 month field internship. My reward for all this hard work is more money and a key to a big box full of narcotics...just kidding. I am doing this because EMS incidents make up about 75% of all incidents in the Fire and Rescue service and I enjoy providing patient care. It puts me in a position to help someone everyday that I'm at work and that's the reason that I got into the business to begin with. So wish me luck, I'm gonna need it.
